Urdu is a language deeply rooted in culture, history, and identity. For many families, it represents a connection to heritage and tradition. In this post, we’ll explore why learning Urdu can benefit children—not just culturally, but also in their language development, confidence, and academic growth.

Firstly, Urdu is the cornerstone of culture in the Indian subcontinent. It forms the core of basic communication, and knowing it helps connect to our roots, history and culture. For example, a lot of literary works like poetry, classics and children’s stories, that have shaped us to who we are today are in Urdu.

Learning Urdu helps your child become part of a much wider linguistic and cultural community. Worldwide, around 231 million people speak Urdu and it is the 10th most spoken language. As Urdu and Hindi are closely related, speakers can understand a combined network of nearly a billion people!

Knowing Urdu helps your child to communicate with their grandparents and other relatives, who may not be fluent in English. It strengthens bonds between family members and allows stories, memories and values to be passed down through generations. Urdu should be a bridge, not a barrier.

Learning Urdu can enhance a child’s understanding of language itself - through exploring the origins (etymology) of Urdu words—many of which are linked to Persian, Arabic, and Turkish—children develop insight into the history of language and culture. Some concepts in Urdu simply don’t translate directly into English, encouraging deeper thinking and emotional expression.

It helps your child excel in other languages through word association and shared vocabulary, for example, one of our students found that it helped her in preparation for and during her Arabic GCSE, and finds that it helps her watch and understand Turkish dramas, which have deepened her cultural understanding and appreciation.

It opens up academic opportunities - many of our students go on to study Urdu at GCSE level, which gives them a better understanding of the language (by learning useful skills eg. analysis and new vocabulary) and helps them in widening their horizons. 🌆
